Police Officer Killed in Motorcycle Crash

On Tuesday, July 12 a Bellaire police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash.

According to the authorities, the accident happened shortly after 1.30 p.m. in a residential area on the 8500 block of Ferris, when 52 year old Officer Anthony Zarate was chasing suspected robbers.

Zarate had been approached in the parking lot of a Target store in the Meyerland shopping center by an employee of the store who told him two men had been stealing from the store and he thought they were armed. It was later discovered that they had a box cutter with them to cut off the security tags of the merchandise. Zarate approached them on foot but they drove off and so he followed them on his motorcycle but was unable to miss a trailer in the residential area of Ferris, hit it and was ejected. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police are still looking for the suspected robbers but say they have identified a person of interest.
