Fort Hood Accidents Reach Record High

Records from the massive army base at Fort Hood shows that the number of accident reached a record high in 2015.

According to the data there were 109 accidents in 2015 which is highest in 10 years, even though the number of soldiers at the base has fallen by around 20% since 2011. Since 2006 there have been 23 deaths and eight amputations. In addition the number of accidents involving death or serious injury has also increased from 42 in 2010 to 50 in 2015.

Several accidents are related to vehicles and in June, nine soldiers died when a transport truck fell into a creek which was swollen by rains. In the same month one soldier was killed and two injured when their vehicle overturned on a training run and two years previously, a soldier was killed when the door of his Humvee was jolted open and he fell out while driving on a trail to a training site.

In addition there are dozens of accidents during physical training with soldiers dying of heat stroke or exhaustion.

There does not appear to be any single reason for the increase.
